Whoa. Talk about being out of my comfort zone! But in the absolute best way possible, having the good fortune to experience a woodturning class with my amiga Ashley Harwood (while putting our Silva Edition thru its paces). I've never turned a thing in my life and this 3-day class was non-stop action.
Seriously when’s the last time you went and did something that was completely outside of your expertise or even basic competence? Well, after my first day ever woodturning, I was truly humbled (and if you've been following along, you know that’s saying a lot).
As a lifelong woodworker, I was convinced this would be a cinch. Wow. That was certainly not the case. But I give enormous credit to Ashley, who does a truly amazing job explaining the tools, techniques and processes. Absolutely fantastic experience. (And that was my impression after Day 1!)
If you’ve ever thought about it, then you absolutely need to pull the trigger. And if you’ve never thought about it, then by all means put a class like this on your list!
Oh, and how did I lose my Silva Turners Edition...
My eyes were opened to what a vast difference there is between being completely covered in wood chips, and well… Not being covered in wood chips.
Fun fact: I took two aprons with me to the class... one for me, and one for my buddy Chris who was joining in the good times. By the second day, I had brought in two additional aprons for my classmates and given my own up to another. At which point I learned what it was like to be truly and completely covered in wood shavings.
Of course we're talking about woodturning here specifically, but the same applies across virtually any application. And yes, it was super annoying to spend the rest of the day getting all those chips from both outside and inside of my clothes! All I could think is how bad I wanted to get that apron back on! Silva Turners Edition for the win!
Funner fact: After being put through their paces, three of four of those aprons turned into sales. And I expect to hear from #4 shortly.
Get yours on order. And if you're not 100% satisfied, send that baby back for something else.
